SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A burglar stole more than pricey electronics from a Spokane Valley home Tuesday. Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies said the suspect also swiped the ashes of the homeowner’s wife.
Authorities say the burglary took place near the intersection of N. Mayhew Road and Rich Avenue in Spokane Valley. Authorities originally reported the burglary as happening in Newman Lake.
The victim, Steven Crowder, said he is unsure exactly when the incident took place. Crowder said he noticed someone had ransacked his home Tuesday afternoon but he had not been there since Monday evening.
The burglar took thousands of dollars in belongings, including home electronics, power tools, a coin collection and a flat screen television. But Crowder said out of all the things stolen, the theft of his wife's ashes by far hurt him the most.
“She was a fantastic woman and a good mother. I miss her everyday,” said Crowder. “Something like this happens and it’s almost like she died all over again cause she was gone unexpectedly, and now she’s gone unexpectedly [again]. And that kind of hurts.”
The ashes were kept in a silver colored, tin box holding according to authorities.
Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest in this incident. Persons with information should call 1-800-222-TIPS.
