SPOKANE – Hundreds of boxers who hope to make the national Olympic team are in Spokane for the 2013 USA Boxing National Championships. And among all the fighters, there is family: brother and sister duo Rashidi and Rashida Ellis of Lynn, Mass.

The Ellis siblings live in the same house, train together, go to the gym together and share the same coach. Their older brother is a professional fighter. The two grew up fighting each other which, they say, worked in their favor.

“She was always a tough one, so she was always with me when she was a little kid, playin’ around outside and stuff,” Rashidi Ellis said.

“I was actually playin’ football before I started boxing,” Rashida Ellis said. “So I had to be tough with my older brothers. They always beat me up all the time, so I had to be tough.”

They both say their bond and their family is their biggest motivation.

Rashidi won his first fight in the Elite Men category. He will fight again Thursday afternoon at the HUB.

Rashida will fight Friday night in the Youth Women category at the Northern Quest Resort & Casino.

Both will be cheering each other on.
