SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -- Brokers with local Windermere Real Estate offices are teaming up to help one of the parks in their backyard.  It is part of a growing effort to clean up local parks as county funding and maintenance keeps dwindling.

Gleneden Park was in need of a major makeover.  It finally got one thanks to outside help joining an active community and the county to clean up.

More than 100 brokers from 300 different Windermere offices showed up at 8:00 a.m. Friday to bring the park back to life.

Gleneden was one of six parks that received less funding for services than other in Spokane County.  That means people are now asked to remove their own garbage.  The ground will not be maintained as often and even restrooms won't be cleaned as often.

Staff with the Parks Department said cleanup events are the future, at least in the short term, to keeping the area green for everyone.

The all-day project was timed to let students enjoy the park just as school ends for the year.  Even before the brokers left for the day, their wish came true.  A few kids started their summer break enjoying the park.

The park cleanup is an annual tradition for Windermere brokers.  They chose a different project each year for their community service day.
