SANDPOINT -- Police say a 28-year-old Alabama woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning as she walked on the railroad tracks south of Sandpoint.
Authorities have identified the woman as Erin M. Likkel from Huntsville, Alabama.
Idaho State Police say Likkel's body was found next to her luggage on the railroad tracks. They say a southbound BNSF train likely hit and killed her.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the body was spotted by a train crew. Investigators are checking with the crew of two previous trains that may have hit her.
There is no crossing in the area where the body was spotted just before 3 a.m. about 200 feet west of the depot. The track was closed about three hours for an investigation.
