SPOKANE -- Spokane Police are questioning a mother who's newborn baby was found dead in the toilet.

According to a search warrant, the woman says she didn't know she was pregnant until she saw the baby's body in the toilet.

On December 7th, the woman called 911 from her South Hill apartment and said she'd given birth in the bathroom and then passed out.

Detectives questioned her at the hospital where she said she suspected she was pregnant but never confirmed it and never sought prenatal care.

The woman says she started cramping and went into her bathroom. She says she sat on the toilet pushed and then saw an umbilical cord.

She went on to say the baby was in the toilet but wasn't moving or crying. She thought it was dead and didn't know what to do.

She says she severed the cord and passed out.

Nurses who tried to save the baby at Sacred Heart Medical Center say there were no signs of trauma.

Investigators searched the woman's home and say they found empty beer bottles and cartons and that they've learned the woman was drinking as recently as a few days before the birth.

The woman has not been arrested, but investigators are calling the circumstances around the baby's death suspicious.

An autopsy is being done to determine the cause and time of the death.
