GRANT COUNTY -- Sheriff's deputies arrested two people in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed one teenager and wounded another earlier this month near Mattawa.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Department, Luis A. Mejia Nunez, 20 of Mattawa, and a 15-year old male juvenile from Mattawa were arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop. Both suspects face both first and second degree murder charges, as well as attempted murder charges.

The pair are scheduled to make an initial court appearance Thursday.

Carlos D. Leyva, 17, was shot and killed in the 17,000 block of Road T.5 SW between the small towns of Beverly-Schawana on March 7th.

Deputies say Carlos Leyva and two other people were walking along the shoulder of T.5 SW when a car with several subjects drove slowly by displaying hand signals to Leyva and his companions.

The car drove past them and Leyva's group was shot at. Leyva was killed, another male was wounded and the third male juvenile was able to flee without injury.
