AIRWAY HEIGHTS -- Spokane County plans to ship all female inmates out of the Spokane County Jail in Downtown Spokane to make way for a potential spike of male inmates.
The county will instead move all the women to a building on the Geiger Corrections Center campus in Airway Heights. The building is about 70-years-old, built as barracks for World War II military personnel.
The reason for the move is because of the shrinking Spokane County budget. Less money was devoted toward work release and home monitoring programs that keep felons from re-offending.
The Geiger building can hold about 125 women. When it opens it will hold about 85 female inmates.
