SPOKANE -- Spokane's 911 call-back system, Alert Spokane, will soon allow cell phones to receive emergency calls as well.
Alert Spokane will begin registering cell phones and for emergency alerts on Monday, September 13.
Email addresses can also be registered to receive alerts.
Alert Spokane is the county-wide telephone call-back system that is activated during an emergency situation. A uniform message describing the threat and immediate actions is recorded, and then sent out to all telephone landlines in Spokane.
Because fewer people make use of landlines and only use cell phones, the system is expanding to provide alerts to more people in any place they are located.
County officials warn the Alert Spokane database may take as long as 120 days to update, to they advise to sign up as early as possible.

Further testing of Alert Spokane is expected to happen in October, 2010.
