SPOKANE – The final three day weekend of the summer is here, and many people are expected to squeeze in that last getaway of the season.
AAA predicts more Americans will drive to their holiday destination, and less will fly. For the first time this year the number of holiday air travelers is expected to decline. AAA says that’s because plane tickets are more expensive. Airfare rates have gone up 13% over the last few months because of rising fuel costs and a higher demand.
AAA thinks more than 31-million Americans will head out of town for the Labor Day weekend and 90% will drive.
The price of gas is near the highest it has ever been for this time of year. AAA says the national average is $3.63/gallon. The last time it was this high before Labor Day was in 2008.
Drivers in Spokane are shelling out even more. The website www.gasbuddy.com shows the average price in Spokane is $3.83/gallon, and in Coeur d’Alene it’s $3.63/gallon.
