MOSES LAKE, Wash.--The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said two people were injured after an accidental shooting Sunday afternoon in Moses Lake. Neither of the injuries were life threatening.

The incident occurred at the 1400 block of W. Craig Street after a gun discharged during gun cleaning.

Terry Cafferty, 69, sat down at his dining room table to clean several pistols while other family members were sitting nearby according to the investigation. Cafferty forgot to remove the loaded magazine while disassembling a compact 9 mm. Cafferty pulled the trigger not realizing a round had been inside according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The pistol discharged with the bullet striking him in the forearm before hitting his 25-year-old daughter-in-law in the chest while she was seated in the living room. They were both taken to the E.R. where the daughter-in-law was later transferred to Central Washington Hospital.

No charges were anticipated on Monday.

“This unfortunate accident is regrettably a sobering reminder of the importance behind proper firearm handling and cleaning in a safe location. We would like to extend our sincerest, warmest wishes to Miriam and Terry for a full recovery,” said Sheriff Tom Jones.
