BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A pair of Boise men got 10-year hunting bans and must pay thousands in penalties after pleading guilty in 4th District Court this month to possession of three unlawfully taken elk.
Derek Smith, who is 41, must pay $240 in fines and court costs and another $1,500 in restitution to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. He also was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 160 days suspended and two years probation.
Meanwhile, Joseph Eden, who is 38, must pay $240 in fines and $750 in restitution. He also was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 165 suspended and two years probation.
Fish and Game officers first nabbed Smith for failing to stop at a Fish and Game check station along State Highway 21 in mid-October.
The ensuing investigation linked him to Eden, who was discovered by officers in the process of butchering an illegally killed bull elk that belonged to a large set of elk antlers seized from Smith's home.
