SPOKANE--Valley Christian School held an assembly Tuesday to discuss the death of football player Drew Swank.

The 17-year-old Junior took a hit in a game Friday night.

He died from severe brain swelling Sunday night.

A Washington State law tries to protect high school athletes from concussions and is considered one of if not the toughest law of its kind in the country.

Zackery Lystedt's law is named after a teenager who suffered a life threatening brain injury in 2006 after getting a concussion and getting back into a football game.

The law passed in may, prohibits young athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion from returning to play without written approval from a health care provider.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 3.5 million sports related concussions happen every year.

While a fatal blow is extremely rare, doctors say more high school students are playing sports so they are seeing more concussions.

The law also says a concussion and head injury information sheet must be signed by athletes and their parents at the beginning of every sports season.
