Sgt. Earl Werner and Spc. Taylor Marks were killed on a convoy security mission in Iraq.
Saturday, we learned the names of the two Oregon National Guard soldiers who were killed yesterday in an explosion during a convoy security mission in Iraq.
Sgt. Earl Werner, 38, of Amboy, Wash., was on his third deployment overseas.
During his time with the Guard, Werner earned the Bronze Star, two Army Commendation medals and the Combat Action badge. He leaves behind a wife and a 19-year-old son.
The other soldier, who died, Spc. Taylor Marks, 19, joined the Oregon Army National Guard after graduating from high school in Monmouth, Ore. Marks was posthumously promoted to that rank from his former rank as a private.
He was contracted to go to the Defense Language Institute but deferred his schooling in order to deploy overseas.
Marks and Werner were members of the 41st Brigade Combat Team.
