CONNELL, Wash. (AP) -- The Coyote Ridge Corrections Center says a prisoner assaulted an officer with a broomstick and two back-up officers were assaulted when they went to help.
Prison spokeswoman Lori Wonders says the corrections officers were treated at a hospital and are expected to recover.
The Tri-City Herald reports the Connell prison was locked down after the Tuesday afternoon assaults.
The prison says it began when inmate Schawn James Cruze lunged at a corrections officer with a broomstick. Two back-up officers were then attacked by inmate David Kopp.
The 39-year-old Cruze is serving a life sentence as a three-strikes offender out of Clark County with convictions for assault, drug possession and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The 23-year-old Kopp is serving time for a murder conviction in Snohomish County.
