VALLEYFORD, Wash. – After years of talking about it, Spokane Valley Fire and Spokane Co. Fire Dist. 8 entered a new agreement to send whichever response units are closest to the call, regardless of the fire stations’ traditional territory.
Under the new auto-aide agreement that began on July 1, the borders between jurisdictions disappear. The computer dispatches the closest available units. Spokane Co. Fire Dist. 8 Asst. Chief Greg Godfrey said the partnership has worked well for the fire departments, but the citizens are the ones who ultimately benefit.
“Now, with auto-aid, they are truly getting the closest fire engine,” Godfrey said. “Even if we’re out, driving around in the city, the computer sees where we’re at all the time.”
Before the new dispatch system, the crews got together to familiarize themselves with each other’s equipment in anticipation for working together more frequently. The agreement works the same for medical calls.
