SANDPOINT, Idaho -- The Sandpoint community gathered Saturday afternoon to welcome home the family of an airman who was killed in Afghanistan December 27.

Hundreds of people gathered on the US 95 bridge that crosses Lake Pend Oreille and waited for the family of Captain David Lyon to drive by. The family was returning from Colorado where Lyon’s funeral was held.

They held flags to honor the family’s loss. When the family crossed the bridge, those holding flags lowered them to show their respect.

Lyon died when his vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Lyon was serving a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan and was performing a combat advisory mission with Afghan National Army Commandos, while working with Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan. He was scheduled to return to Peterson in February.
