SPOKANE, Wash. -- Staff at Spokanimal euthanized 70 cats Tuesday evening after test came back positive for a parvo-virus called feline distemper.
Spokanimal Director of Operations, Laura Thulean, said the cats became infected when 2 litters were dropped off at the shelter. Thulean said the cats infected experience diarrhea, sneezing, vomiting and weight loss.
Thulean said the disease spreads through excretion of bodily fluids and shedding. The shelter consulted with its veterinarians and a doctor of shelter medicine at U.C Davis advised them to put the animals down.
“It was best to euthanize them otherwise we would have the disease everywhere,” said Thulean.
Feline Distemper can be treated but mortality for sick cats is 90 percent.
