WENATCHEE, Wash. - Shooting targets that explode when fired upon have come under scrutiny after they have been linked to wildfires.
Some think the exploding targets are dangerous and should be banned; others say they're no danger.
The Wenatchee World reports (http://bit.ly/14YRIKe) that as exploding targets become more popular they are more often linked to wildfires. Fire officials last summer said two fires -- one near Entiat, and another smaller one near Cashmere -- were started by people shooting at targets that explode.
A larger fire known that scorched 73,378 acres in north central Washington resulted after two people went shooting with an exploding target in a dry, grassy area as wildfires burned. U.S. Forest Service officials have not said whether the fire was caused by the target or a bullet striking something else.
