PULLMAN, WA – Washington State University police have identified a person they believe responsible for firing several errant rifle shots that landed near the university playfields Sunday afternoon.
The suspect admits to target practicing at a rural location roughly a mile away. Investigators have located two separate bullets near the ball fields. A nearby car window is believed to have been hit. At least one student reports hearing a bullet go past.
The suspect has since surrendered his rifle and ammunition to investigators.
The shooting led to the evacuation of the WSU playfields, and an emergency alert issued campus wide.
The investigation remains ongoing to determine what charges may be recommended to the Whitman County prosecutor’s office.
