Plummer, ID. – In February, 2012 the Coeur d’Alene Tribe launched a new wellness program called GuL Sni’k’wi’n, or “Choices” in the Coeur d’Alene language. The goal of the pilot program is to help people get healthy and stay healthy. Currently “Choices” has 155 participants including Coeur d’Alene Casino & Resort employees, Benewah Medical Center employees and members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.
“Choices” kicked off with an overall health presentation by Dr. Gina Wolf. Wolf’s presentation covered a wide variety of health topics, including posture, exercise, nutrition and much more.
The overall health presentation was followed by a wellness fair. This gave participants an opportunity to get screened which included waist measurements, blood pressure, A1C (overall blood sugar for the past three months), and cholesterol levels. Participants then received information regarding their target levels and are encouraged to improve or maintain personal measurements below their target levels through everyday choices such as eating healthy, exercising or quitting smoking. Participants will be screened again after three, six and nine months in the program. Individuals who maintain or improve their numbers have the opportunity to earn a cash incentive.
The Coeur d’Alene Tribe has seen significant increases in health insurance costs over the past few years. Their hope is that the “Choices” pilot program will lower health-care costs, increase productivity and raise morale.
Participants of the “Choices” program have free access to the Benewah Medical Center, which includes personal trainers, registered dietitians, wellness coaches, fitness coaches, group exercise classes and much more. Participants also receive a weekly e-mail that includes a healthy recipe for them to try along with health & nutrition tips. In addition, the group has weekly Lunch n Learns which include a variety of educational topics such as nutrition, physical activity, mental & physical health, financial information such as money management.
Four of the people participating in the “Choices” program have volunteered to let us join them on their journey for a healthier life style. For more information on each of the participants and to see the progress they are making, click on their story links.
