Spokane – An 8-year-old Cheney girl, with a rare form of bone cancer, has returned home after traveling to Portland for a special surgery to remove a tumor.
Doctors removed Sierra Higbee’s left foot and attached it to her knee. She still needs chemotherapy and will not be ready for a prosthetic leg for several months.
Sierra admits she still has some pain from the procedure, and doctors were unable to remove all of the cells they needed. They are keeping an eye on two spots on her chest.
Her family says Sierra’s positive spirit keeps everyone focused on looking forward.
"She's such a trooper. She just brings out the good in everyone because of her strength,” said her dad, David Higbee.
It may be months before Sierra is able to walk again, but she is already looking forward to learning how to ride her bike again.
