SEATTLE -- The juicing movement has exploded in Seattle.

Strawberry Moon Juice started three years ago and now there is increased competition as people seek out ways to get more nutrients in their daily diets.

Sean Dereck, the owner of Strawberry Moon Juice, says there is up to two pounds of fruits and vegetables in one bottle of juice. He adds that there’s a benefit of drinking the vegetables and fruit, instead of eating it.

“It’s quick energy without having to go through your digestive tract. It’s lots of nutrients, lots of micro nutrients, lots of oxygen and it gets into the bloodstream fast,” said Dereck.

Strawberry Moon Juice offers a juice fast. People drink four bottles of juice a day for 3 or 5 days. After the fast, Dereck says people really notice a difference in energy and more.

“People say they smell better, smell the environment better, they can hear better and senses increase,” said Dereck.

Critics say during a juicing cleanse, people don’t get the fiber they need. Registered dietician Michelle Babb agrees that when you do a juice cleanse long-term, you start to break down muscle mass because you’re not consuming enough calories. But she says if it’s just a few days, it’s not harmful.

“I think it’s a nice way to hit the reset button short-term, but I think you could also incorporate fresh juices that you’re making from fresh vegetables and fruit into your diet and have that be a part of your overall eating plan. And have that be a more sustainable way to incorporate that into your life,” said Babb.

Babb also says juice cleanses are not an effective way to lose weight and keep it off.

“A juice cleanse would produce rapid weight loss in the beginning, but as soon as you start eating food again, that weight will come back on again, so it’s not something that’s sustainable,” said Babb.

Dereck recommends after a juice fast, you maintain healthy eating habits and continue incorporating juice into your daily diet.

If you are interested in a juice cleanse, it’s not cheap. A 3-day juice fast from Strawberry Moon Juice costs $117. Like many juicing companies, they offer home delivery for your convenience.
