PORTLAND – Costco Wholesale is offering free vaccines in its pharmacies for those who may have eaten berries contaminated with hepatitis A.
Townsend Farms, of Fairview, Ore., announced Tuesday that it was recalling 332,000 bags of its Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berries, packaged under the Townsend Farms label at Costco.
The FDA reports the actual virus has not been found in any samples of Townsend Farms packaging, but 34 people in five states are sick and the company appears to be the common thread.
The CDC is advising anyone who ate the berries in the last 12 to 14 days to contact their local health department to see if they need a vaccine.
Costco will also pay for the cost of vaccinations, said Craig Wilson, a food illness expert for the company.
