HOUSTON -- A new diet is saying “no” to breakfast in the morning. A doctor says skipping the first meal of the day is the key to weight loss, but not everyone is buying it.
For those determined to lose those extra pounds, most trainers will say that you’ve got to eat breakfast.
“You know, it’s the old cliché -- kick start the day, and that's a hundred percent accurate,” said Anytime Fitness trainer Bobby Speer.
But the authors of a new weight-loss book, “The 8-Hour Diet,” say that’s not true.
Peter Moore, with Men's Health Magazine, says people don't need to eat first thing in the morning to lose pounds.
Moore says it doesn't matter when you eat; if you just reduce calories, you'll lose weight.
Jim Heim says when he wanted to lose weight he started eating breakfast every day. He dropped nearly 100 pounds.
"I didn't like it at first, but then I got used to it and I think it helped my metabolism," said Heim.
Most people KHOU 11 News talked to said skipping breakfast is a bad idea.
"I think it's silly. Why? You need some protein; you need some carbohydrates to get your body in the morning,” said Carmen Busceme, a Houston gym member.
"We believe breakfast is one of the best meals of the day," said My Fit Foods Nutritionist, Amanda Goldsmith.
It's called ‘The 8-Hour Diet’ because it suggests you eat only during an eight-hour period during the day. So if your first meal is at noon, your last meal should be at 8:00 that night.
Not everybody is buying the story.
"Well I don't feel very good by 10:00 in the morning if I've been up 2 hours and haven't eaten anything,” said Verna Ray, a Houston gym member.
