SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Spokane high school student took home a national award for his musical skills.

Gabriel Soileau, a senior at Lewis & Clark High School, took the top honor in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior Composition Competition.

Soileau, a pianist, bassist and accordionist, has been studying piano for eight years.  He is also the organizer of The Vagabonds Balkan Brass Band.  This award marks the third time Soileau has won a national award for one of his compositions.

Soileau won $2,000 for the award and his composition will be performed in March during the conference winner’s recital at the 2014 MTNA National Conference in Chicago.
