LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran actor Alan Young is fondly remembering actress Connie Hines, who played his wife on the long-running TV show "Mr. Ed."

Young says everyone could tell that Hines, who died last week at age 78, was right for the part when she walked in for the audition. He says she "just exuded something — fresh air, I guess you could call it."

Hines went on to make a lasting impact on a generation of Baby Boomers as Carol Post, the pretty, perky, young newlywed who never let it bother her that her husband, Wilbur, was seen by everybody else as a nut case with a horse he thought could talk only to him.

Young told The Associated Press on Thursday that a memorial service is scheduled for Jan. 15.
