ROCKFORD, Wash. -- People in Rockford are trying to figure out how to come up with the cash for its law enforcement bill this year.
The town of 470 people has not paid the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office the $25,000 it costs for unincorporated towns to pay for full-time deputies.
Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said the amount owed pays part of a deputy's salary. The county subsidizes the rest.
Rockford Mayor Micki Harnois her town is in a tough position. Residents voted down a levy that would have funded law enforcement.
Knezovich said the town needs to pay up because his department is missing $30,000 of it budget, which could force him to lay off a deputy.
If Rockford cannot find the money in its budget, the issue may be put on the ballot again.
