SPOKANE--A new city policy forced police to evict people living in tents in a homeless camp in Downtown Spokane Friday.

Most were camping illegally underneath Interstate 90 near Division.  City officials say they had gotten numerous complaints about the so-called “tent city” that had grown under the viaduct.

The city gave all those staying there until noon Friday to remove their belongings. City code does not allow such transient encampments.

City officials say a homeless outreach team has been out meeting with individuals and presenting various sheltering options and services.

After the 24-hour notice expired, city workers and a Geiger work crew spent several hours cleaning up belongings and trash left behind at various locations under the viaduct.

The city says police will monitor activity in the area to ensure another tent city does not go up.
