SPOKANE--A local mother hopes some new construction will help prevent a tragedy similar to the one that took her daughter’s life four years ago.
16-year-old Lorissa Green was t-boned at the intersection of Cheney-Spokane Rd. and Highway 194 on January 16th, 2009. The next day she was pronounced dead.
Three months after the death of her daughters, Debi Hammel went before the state Transportation Committee in Olympia to ask for safety improvements at the intersection. There had been numerous wrecks there over the years.
This week, contractors for the Washington State Department of Transportation started prep work to build a new interchange with an overpass at the intersection. It will prevent drivers from having to cross 55 MPH traffic to make a left turn onto the highway. The work is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
