Thousands of gun rights supporters are expected to attend a second amendment “Guns Across America” rally in Olympia.
Organizers say they want to speak out against misinformation and attacks on the character of gun owners.
The event starts at noon, outside the Washington State Capitol.
A coalition of guns rights and conservative groups organized a "Gun Appreciation Day" and urged Americans nationwide to show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges, and shows across the country.
"The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people," said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward, president of Political Media, Inc. "If the American people don't fight back now, Obama will do to the Second Amendment what he has already done to the First with Obamacare -; gut it without a moment's thought to our basic constitutional rights."
But Interfaith leaders from across Washington State spoke out against the rally to be held at the state Capitol on the same weekend the nation celebrates the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"We deplore their celebration of the very instrument of MLK's assassination and see their actions as contemptuous of his legacy," said Rev. Dr. Sanford "Sandy" Brown, pastor at Seattle's First United Methodist Church.
They planned to send a delegation to Olympia to provide an alternative voice to the pro-gun rally.
Also in Olympia, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office will be collecting unwanted firearms and ammunition. People can also pick-up free gun locks.
In addition, TCSO will have prescription medication disposal bins in place, and the Olympia/ Thurston County CrimeStoppers will be on site to provide child identification services.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McLane Fire Department at 125 Delphi Rd. NW
