COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho -- The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School is sparking some debate nationwide about how to explain the situation to children.
School administrators in Coeur d’Alene are choosing not to talk about the shooting in classrooms there.
With winter break around the corner, administrators said the goal is to help students focus on their studies and create a sense of normalcy.
Coeur d’Alene Public Schools Superintendent Hazel Bauman said parents sent a series of emails requesting normalcy, so teachers in all grades were asked not to discuss what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary or to watch any news coverage in class.
Bauman said the second part of the post-shooting plan focuses on keeping students safe.
“We need to keep kids calm, and make sure they feel safe so they know going to school is a place for teaching and learning,” she said.
Teachers were told they could answer questions if needed to reassure the kids they are safe in school.
