COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho-- An 8th grade Canfield Middle School student won the ninth annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday. Tricia McCullough out-spelled 44 other students.

McCullough correctly spelled the word “precocious,” to win an all-expense paid trip to the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. She also received a Merriam Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, a $100 Samuel Louis Sugarman U.S. savings bond, a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online Student Edition, a plaque, a medallion and a North Idaho College events pass for the 2013-2014 school year.

The 8th grader previously participated in the North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee as a fourth-grader in 2009 and fifth-grader in 2010.

The North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee featured students from 54 schools in 11 districts across North Idaho.
