SPOKANE -- A recent string of garage fires has authorities concerned about the threat of arson in the Spokane area.

Fire investigators believe a Monday night garage fire in North Spokane was intentionally set. The home was vacant at the time.

In the past week, there have been three other detached garage fires in Spokane, and investigators believe they were all the work of arsonists.

Spokane Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer says he doesn’t believe the same person started all of the suspicious fires. All of the garages were I different parts of town, and the fires happened on different days of the week.

And nobody has actually witnessed how any of the fires started.

“This is a huge safety issue because in this type of weather—we are pushing 80 degrees today, relatively 20 mile per hour wind—a garage fire can spread quickly to pine trees and structures,” Schaeffer said.

Schaeffer adds all the fires occurred in older detached garages, and all seem to have been fires of opportunity. Each was set with available combustibles nearby, and they all had quick access for getting away.
