Home break-in turns violent in Spokane over weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A break in near East Gordon Avenue and North Crestline Street allegedly turned into an assault involving a handgun last weekend.

Court documents said Edward Harkness saw a woman enter the home without permission. He armed himself with a handgun and went over to investigate.

Harkness was a neighbor of the house with permission to enter and watch over the house.

Reports state when Harkness entered them, a man and woman were inside. The man who allegedly broke in was later identified as Sean Gilbert.

Documents state Gilbert and the woman tried to escape the residence, but Harkness told them to stay where they were and reportedly aimed the gun at the man.

Court documents said Gilbert tried to attack Harkness. Harkness then said he hit Gilbert with his elbow first and then hit his head with the gun.

Witnesses said the struggle between the two men continued outside the front door and into the yard.

Reports said neighbors saw the struggle and intervened until police arrived on the scene.

Sean Gilbert is being held in Spokane County Jail and is facing several charges, including burglary and assault.
