KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho --- Deputies captured a man suspected of killing a 2-year-old girl in Kootenai County on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives are investigating the death of the toddler, who was found dead earlier this month at a home on Spokane’s South Hill.

The owner of a cabin near Worley called KCSO after her neighbor reported a suspicious person at the house on Tuesday afternoon. Deputies said they responded to the residence, located on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene and found a white SUV parked in the driveway, with a license plate stolen from Spokane.

Deputies said a man was walking around the cabin and gave them a false name. Deputies said they questioned the man and recognized him as Jason J. Obermiller, 32, the suspect in the Spokane homicide.

Police search for person of interest in 2-year-old's death

Spokane County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Detectives are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl as a homicide. Officials said the girl was found dead Monday at a home on East 55th Avenue near South Thor. Court documents filed late Wednesday afternoon said detectives are looking into three people who could possibly be charged with criminal mistreatment.

Obermiller has an extensive criminal history with charges for domestic violence, assaults, DUIs, and malicious mischief. Court documents said Obermiller is also a drug user and that it was irresponsible for the mother to leave the children in his care.

According to court documents, a woman said the home where the toddler lives is "where her heroin dealer lives."

When medics arrived at the home, they found the 2-year-old laying on her back in bed, already dead. The mother told deputies she had left the home to go drinking with a man she only knew by the name "stranger" and said she left the 2-year-old alone with three other children at home with Obermiller and another friend. The mother said she came home at 3:00 a.m. and went straight to bed. She told deputies she did not check on any of the kids when she got home.

The mother said she peeked in on the child at 11:00 a.m. the next morning but thought the child was still sleeping and it was not until a 4-year-old in the home checked on the 2-year-old that anyone knew the child was not breathing. According to the mother, Obermiller left the home before she woke up Monday morning and has not been able to reach him since.

Investigators said during a search of the home, detectives found several ounces of meth, some heroin and handgun. They then requested a second search warrant.

The names of the mother and persons at the residence are not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

Officials said three siblings of the deceased victim have been placed with Child Protective Services.
