SPOKANE, Wash. -- A woman saying she was the wife of suspected North Monroe car bomber Siaosilepelenise Tuaimalo told KREM 2 News that they have never heard of the second bombing suspect Robert Showers and said there must have been a mistake.
She said there is no way Tuaimalo was involved in a car bombing with a man he has never met. However, federal documents indicated that an acquaintance of Tuaimalo told investigators that he gave her a piece of paper with a list of bomb-making material and said Showers needed the items to make an explosive.
Tuaimalo's family released a statement on Monday afternoon, saying:
"As a family we do not condone anything that Siaosi has been alleged with, but will stand by him through this process and after. We don't believe he had any relation with the bombing. It's understandable that given his history and choices he's made prior, that he's made himself an easy target, but we firmly believe he was in the middle of trying to change and find legitimate work. Siaosi has always been a tender hearted man, who's done anything and everything in his power to protect and provide for his family."
Court documents said a neighbor's surveillance video got a shot of the suspect vehicle which appeared to be an older Chrysler. Witnesses told detectives that Tuaimalo had been driving that particular car the Friday before the bombing. The same witnesses also said Tuaimalo and another man stopped by her house the night before the bombing and told her they were going to do something very bad.
Both Showers and Tuaimalo have not been charged with the bombing. Showers is charged with possession of explosives by a felon. Court documents said he had 12 pounds of an explosive mixture called ANFO. Tuaimalo is accused of having several guns. He is also a convicted felon.
Federal court documents also said agents searched a home on Wednesday in relation to a narcotics investigation. They said this is when Tuaimalo was found. Still unclear is the motive for the North Spokane bombing.
Authorities also said the intended victim in the bombing was also shot at prior to the explosion.
