SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A young man used a hatchet to smash a display case at a Spokane Valley Walmart.

Police responded to the store near Sprague and Fancher around 4 a.m. Thursday.

They say he used the weapon to shatter the glass case and then took two iPads. When employees approached him, the man allegedly flashed a gun and said “don’t touch me.”

The suspect left the hatchet behind when he took off on foot. Police are not confident they will be able to identify the man with fingerprints, since he was wearing gloves. They plan to review surveillance tapes to find his picture.

Authorities describe the suspect as a young black man, either in his late teens or early 20s. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt.
