SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane police are recommending charges against two players with the University of Southern California basketball team.

USC suspended forward Dwayne Dedmond and center James Blasczyk after incidents in Spokane following a game in Pullman on March 10. Several calls came in reporting the players instigated fights and assaulted people downtown.

The police department is recommending Spokane County prosecutors charge each player with second-degree assault. Two Spokane Major Crimes detectives flew down to Los Angeles to investigate the case. The Spokane Police Department says while this was not a murder or rape case, investigators pursued it aggressively because the attack appears to be completely random and because of the number of victims involved.

Fights happen on a daily basis in Spokane that don’t’ require the number of resources this one did. The police department says it always sends investigators out of town when a violent crime is serious like this one.

“It’s our obligation to investigate a case like this to the fullest,” Monique Cotton with the police department said. “This was a high profile incident involving a lot of people. We want to make sure we get that story firsthand.”

USC’s athletic department is cooperating with the investigation.
