COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- A man suspected of burglarizing a home was arrested Saturday morning after a stand-off with police.

Officials said William Velis, 22, broke into an apartment in a 4-plex on the 4200 block of Abbey Road around 5:15 a.m. and was caught by the resident. There was an altercation, police said Velis displayed a handgun then fled to his apartment which was in the same 4-plex.

Authorities said Velis barricaded himself inside his apartment and refused to communicate with law enforcement. SWAT was then called in to assist police. Officials later found Velis' 2-year-old child was in the apartment with him and his wife had fled from the unit.

Around 7 a.m. Velis finally complied with SWAT demands and handed over his child. Authorities say the child was unharmed.

Velis was taken into custody for residential burglary and a weapons offense. He was then transported to jail.

Authorities did shut down Atlas Road at Abbey Road for a short time and it has since been reopened. Neighbors were also evacuated from their homes.
