SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police on routine patrol in Downtown Spokane nabbed a suspect for a number of criminal charges following a dangerous pursuit.

An officer patrolling for vehicle prowlers in Downtown Spokane noticed a man driving recklessly in a Honda Accord around 3 a.m. Thursday. Police say he was speeding, running through red lights and cutting off other cars.

The driver, 22-year-old Tyler Sijohn, allegedly refused to stop for police and led them on a pursuit. Officers ran the car’s license plates during the chase and learned the car had been reported stolen.

They continued to trail Sijohn until the pursuit became too dangerous. The suspect ended up stopping when he crashed into a parked car at 5th and Cedar.

Police tried to track him as he ran away on foot but they lost him in an alley. Officials then brought in a K-9 that finally found Sijohn hiding on the roof of a garage about a block away.

He is now charged with reckless driving, attempting to elude, possession of a stolen vehicle, DUI, driving with a suspended license and obstructing.

The Accord Sijohn was driving caused some additional trouble of its own as police ran after the suspect. Police say he didn’t put the car in park before running away. The car rolled down a hill and struck a police car. No one was injured in that crash.

Other officers chased after a passenger who jumped from Sijohn’s car. Melissa L. Racine, a 21-year-old transient, was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle.
