SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A young man used a hatchet to smash a display case at a Spokane Valley Walmart.

Police responded to the store near Sprague and Fancher around 4 a.m. on Thursday.

They say he used the weapon to shatter the glass case and then took two iPads. When employees approached him, the man allegedly flashed a gun and said “don’t touch me.”

The suspect left the hatchet behind when he took off on foot. Police are not confident they will be able to identify the man with fingerprints, since he was wearing gloves. They plan to review surveillance tapes to find his picture.

Detectives believe the suspect may have also committed a similar style theft earlier in the week in North Spokane and may still be armed.

Anyone who can help identify the suspect is asked to call Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detective Kirk Keyser at 509-477-6611.
