SPOKANE-- Neighbors banded together in Spokane to create dozens of block watch programs as a response to rising crime rates.
Authorities said block watch programs are up 50% this year alone in Spokane.
Homeowners jumped at the chance to join the groups in the Indian Trail neighborhood after numerous burglaries and car break-ins. They created watch groups for a two block radius.
Those who joined said the group puts their mind at ease knowing that neighbors are also keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. The group notifies neighbors via e-mail if they see anything out of the ordinary.
The Spokane C.O.P.S. office said they credit the jump in new block watches to more neighbors being aware of crime in their area.
