SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane Police are taking a new approach to help homeowners protect their belongings.

Officers are trying to patrol neighborhoods as often as they can looking for garages left open and warn homeowners before a thief gets there.

Spokane Police say this is a proactive attempt at reducing crime.

“This is just the next step as far as garage burglaries go. Educating people not to leave them open,” said Officer Traci Douglas.

The goal is to make burglars feel as if it would be too much work to try and take something from a house.

The new effort comes as garage thefts are down 40% for the West Central Neighborhood.
