SPOKANE-- A former Spokane Shock player accused of setting his apartment on fire was sent to Eastern State Hospital.
Investigators say Kevin Ellison told them he started the fire in his apartment in Junes because god told him to. Since being arrested Ellison has been in custody at the Spokane County Jail.
Ellison’s attorney asked the court to move him to Eastern State Hospital. His mental health has been in question since the fire was started.
The judge granted the transfer on Friday.
Court documents say Ellison told fire investigators that he intentionally set a fire at his apartment because "god had told him to set the bed on fire."
Ellison lived with other Spokane Shock football players at the Big Trout Lodge Apartment in Liberty Lake.
The Deputy Fire Marshal says Ellison repeated multiple times that god told him to start the fire.
Ellison escaped out a window the night of the fire. The fire damage is estimated to be around $50,000.
Ellison will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal's Office while at Eastern State.
His trial is scheduled for November.
