SPOKANE-- The Spokane County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Detectives are investigating an accidental shooting involving a Spokane Police Officer's duty weapon. Sheriff's Office investigators have taken the lead in this case at the request of the Spokane Police Department.
Spokane Police Officer Barry O'Connell's 10 year old daughter accidentally shot herself in the leg. O'Connell's daughter has been listed in stable condition following the incident that occurred Sunday.
The Spokane Police Department will conduct an internal investigation into possible SPD policy violations by Officer O'Connell at the conclusion of the Sheriff's Office investigation. It’s still undetermined whether the officer will face disciplinary action.
The department is not releasing whether O’Connell was home at the time or not.
O’Connell is currently off on vacation time.
The police department says the weapon’s policy for officers is to keep their guns secure at home and while on duty.
