COEUR D’ALENE-- Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo chased and caught a robber Thursday night after an alert citizen called in an armed robbery.
The incident occurred at 6:40pm at the Boulevard Food Mart located at 1801 NW Blvd.
The store clerk reported to 911 a transient later identified as Jon Wallace Hohnsbehn had come into the Food Mart and stole a couple of bottles of beer. The clerk confronted Hohnsbehn and he pulled a knife on the clerk and said “I will stab you”. Hohnsbehn then left the area on foot and walked toward Riverstone.
Chief Longo had turned onto NW Boulevard when the robbery call was aired. Officers Tim Neal and Pete Tufford also responded to the area to assist the Chief in locating the suspect.
David Travieso, 41 years of age of Post Falls was in the store and witnessed the robbery. Travieso began following suspect on foot keeping in phone contact with 911. Travieso let operators know the suspect’s location. Travieso said the suspect picked up a rock and was threatening him with it.
Chief Longo found the suspect walking on the Centennial Trail just North West of Beebe Blvd. The suspect, identified as Jon Hohnsbehn, was carrying a beer bottle and kept drinking while the Chief ordered him to drop the bottle and get down on the ground.
Hohnsbehn shouted obscenities at the Chief and refused to comply. Chief Longo and officers Tufford and Neal were able to physically gain control of Hohnsbehn and put him under arrest.
Hohnsbehn, 40, was transported to the jail and charged with robbery and aggravated assault.
