SPOKANE, Wash. -- A new downtown police unit will begin patrolling alleys more aggressively.

Officers say alleys are a favorite spot for thieves and prowler. They use these spots to exchange stolen merchandise as well as do drugs, sell drugs, etc.

Sergeant Dan Water will be in charge of the new police unit. He says last year there were not enough officers to keep an eye on these dark areas.

"When you can't be in the alleys on an ongoing basis, or anywhere for that matter, and you lack those resources to take care of it. It starts to become an issue."

Officers will be cruising up and down alleys in their cars and bicycles.

Alleys are now a priority and they will get more attention than they have in several years.
