SPOKANE, Wash.-- Cassie Castner confirmed that police made an arrest in connection with the death of her toddler son.

Castner told KREM 2 News that her ex-boyfriend Josh Burnett, 23, has been picked up for second degree murder. Burnett was booked on a charge of 2nd Degree Murder.

Police investigated the death of Rylee Castner, 18 months, who suffered a blunt impact to the head. The Spokane County Medical Examiner ruled Rylee Castner’s death as a homicide on Monday.

The 18 month old died at Sacred Heart Medical Center on March 31.

Police believe Burnett beat the toddler the day prior to his death.

An autopsy revealed that the toddler died from a subdural hemorrhage and right parietal skull fracture. The Medical Examiner confirmed that the injuries happened due to blunt impact to head.

Police searched a house along the 2100 block of West Mansfield Court during their investigation. A search warrant revealed that medics arrived at the house to find Castner bleeding from the mouth and bruised under both cheeks. An officer at the scene said that the bruising appeared to be finger marks. The same officer also observed a large indentation on the left side of the toddler’s head according to the search warrant.

Court documents showed that the Castner’s grandmother noticed blood coming from the toddler’s mouth while at a barbeque. She immediately called 911 when she spotted the blood according to police. The grandmother told officers that the toddler was lethargic and unresponsive at the time.

Burnett does not have any other felonies but does have a domestic complaint in March 2012. Court documents show he has a biological child with another woman who filed the domestic complaint.
