COEUR D'ALENE -- Monday morning just before 5:30 a.m. Coeur d’Alene Police received a report of a stolen 2001 Chevy Cavalier taken from 3000 block of 15th St.

Shelly Childers told police she was awakened by her 18-year old son Richie. He claimed two men had just kicked in their front door, destroyed contents in the kitchen, took her keys and stole her car.

Shelley discovered glassware and other items had been thrown about the kitchen, and her vehicle was missing from the driveway. She immediately called police.

Richie told police the two males came to the home because they thought he had stolen an iPhone from them when they were all at a party together a week ago.

Just before 10 a.m., Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies were notified of a submerged vehicle at Honeysuckle Beach.

After talking with Richie again police were able to determine he and a friend took the vehicle out for a joy ride while his mom was sleeping.

Richie told officers he thought the water near the boat ramp at Honeysuckle Beach was just a big puddle. He drove into the water and the vehicle quickly became submerged.

They were able to get out and walked to a friend's house who gave them a ride home. Richie then went home and kicked in the door and broke glass to tell his mom someone else did it.

Richie has been issued a citation for filing a false police report. Additional charges are pending.
