SPOKANE, Wash. -- A wanted felon ditched a stolen vehicle and hid in a Felts Field Airport bathroom until deputies caught up with him, according to police.
Employees of the Division of Social and Health Services office in 8700 block of East Trent noticed the stolen Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot Tuesday morning.
They told police two men abandoned the Jeep and ran.
Deputies searched the area and found two men matching the employees’ descriptions walking along the train tracks near Felts Field. A train delayed the officers, but they eventually found both of them inside of the airport.
Police caught Jeremy Beeching, 19, hiding in a bathroom stall. A check of Beeching’s name showed he had an outstanding felony warrant for theft of a motor vehicle already on his record. He was arrested, but reportedly refused to talk about the stolen Jeep.
Deputies found the other man on a staircase. He told police he met Beeching just days before and they abandoned the Jeep when it ran out of gas. The man allegedly told the deputies he smoked meth with Beeching that morning and he was too high to notice some of his odd behavior throughout the day. This included carrying around a duffel bag and backpack he grabbed from the Jeep before heading to Felts Field.
A visitor at the airport later found that backpack in the trash, along with sunglasses, a set of gloves and shaved keys. Deputies found the duffel bag near DSHS and say it contained the Jeep’s stereo equipment.
The DSHS employees positively identified both men as the people who ran from the parking lot.
Beeching was booked into the Spokane Co. Jail for the previous felony warrant, as well as possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of motor vehicle theft tools.
Police could not determine if the passenger knew the Jeep was stolen. He was released after questioning.
